EN54-14: Amendments in the New Guideline

The EN54-14, which contains guidelines for the planning, design, installation, commissioning, use and maintenance of fire detection and alarm systems, was updated by the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) on 02.03.2018. TSE recognized this standard with its long name "TSE CEN/TS 54-14 November 2018" as a Turkish Standard and published it in English. This version replaced the Turkish Standard that was in effect since 2008.

The following main amendments stand out as compared to the previous version.

The definitions, including the detector coverage areas and detector installation heights that had an important place in the planning and design section, were taken from the Annex to the Main Text section.

Definitions were added for the detector technologies containing multiple sensors and the detectors operating with radio frequency, and their requirements were determined.

New requirements were established for cabling.

The Annex-D, which includes maintenance routines that were not available previously, and the Annex-E, which includes the commissioning checklist, were added.

While making designs, we frequently receive the question "At how many meters should I use a detector?" There is also an amendment in the section about the detection radius of the detector, which is the answer to this question. While the distance of the smoke detector to any point in the room was 7.5 m previously, this distance is reduced to 6.2 m. For the temperature detector, this distance is from 5 m to 4.5 m.

Another question is: "How low can I install the smoke detector from the ceiling?" We could previously install the smoke detector at any point, provided that it remains 5% inside the height of the area, but this ratio is updated as 10%. For example, in an area with ceiling height of 5 m, the detector could be installed a  maximum of 25 cm below the ceiling previously, but now it can be installed 50 cm down. Another key point is that the detector cannot be installed lower than 600 mm.

Following the amendment in terms of the installation height of the pull station, the pull station can be installed between 0.9 and 1.4 m. It is also recommended to install the pull station at a height of 1.2 m from the floor. The fact that this recommended value is within the range indicated in the 2015 Turkish Fire Protection Regulation eliminates any possible comments.
