Energy Resources of Turkey and Environmental Impacts

Energy Resources of Turkey and Environmental Impacts

As it is mentioned in the Copenhagen Letter, "It is time to take responsibility for the world that we have created"

While producing and consuming energy, we continuously consume the resources that nature presents to us, i.e. we are shooting ourselves in the foot. For this reason, we need to produce resources for nature. Creating resources for nature is something that every individual can do, but the first step that we will take is to respect nature. We can realize our sustainability in the world by consuming less natural resources, preserving forests and planting new trees, generating less garbage and ensuring recycling. Having this consciousness as individuals will automatically create this structure in the enterprises where we work.

Energy Scorecard of Turkey

According to the 2018 data, we obtain approximately 70% of our electricity generation from natural gas and coal in our country. The energy that we generate from renewable energy sources makes up 10% of our total generation.

We import the majority of our electricity generation as natural gas. The fact that a higher number of electrical devices and vehicles will be used with the development of technology in the next few years demonstrates that our electricity consumption will increase exponentially.

To meet our energy needs, we need to increase energy savings as well as increase electricity generation. We need new power generation plants. For new plants, it will be mandatory for us to use local sources and renewable energy, establish our plants with less importation and reduce the demand for power. It is important to produce less investment and less foreign-dependent energy.

Kyoto Protocol

Regarding this issue, the Kyoto Protocol is the most concrete step taken in the international arena against global warming, and Turkey is among the countries that became a party to the Kyoto protocol in 2009.

According to the protocol, the countries undertake to reduce and limit their greenhouse gas emissions at different ratios as a result of negotiations. Turkey has joined the protocol on a voluntary basis and has not made a numerical commitment on limitation / reduction of emissions, but the Ministry of Energy takes measures in the field of energy efficiency every year as a general policy.

ISO 50001 Standards

In industrial and commercial buildings that consume a vast amount of energy, we need systems that will use all energy sources efficiently in accordance with the ISO 50001 standards. We need to implement standards such as the ISO 50001 in our facilities so that we can use water, natural gas and electricity more efficiently, generate less waste for nature and ensure reporting of it.

While achieving all this efficiency, we reduce our production and investment costs by releasing less carbon into the environment. Most importantly, we will leave a healthier and more livable environment to the next generations.
