How Do Biometric Recognition Systems Function?

Where are the Biometric Recognition Systems Used?

Only authorized persons are allowed to pass through the entrances in modern buildings. Card readers are used in a large part of the installed systems for people to pass through certain points. However, malicious people can seize this card by force and violate all security precautions.

In certain access systems, a password is used. However over time, these passwords can be learned, or people can log in and out in place of their friends where tally sheets are formed.

In order to prevent such situations, where security risks are high, we use limbs that are unique to every person in the world for authentication.

What are Biometric Devices?

The devices in which the measurable biological properties of humans are recognized and converted into metric values are called biometric devices.

  • Fingerprint Reading Devices
  • Vein Reading Devices
  • Palm Reading Devices
  • Iris Recognition Devices
  • Face Recognition Devices

Working Principles of Biometric Recognition Systems

The basic operating logic of the biometric devices is as follows: 1 sample biometric record (enrollment) is taken with a biometric device. When the person passes through the device, the person who passes is identified by making a comparison between the record received and the enrollment, and if he/she has authorization, his/her passage is allowed. Today, biometric systems are used not only in security, but also in hospitals, sports halls, mobile phones, banking transactions, Facebook, etc.

Multiple biometric records (enrollment) are taken by scanning your face in face recognition systems, your eyes in eye recognition systems, your palms in palm scanning systems, etc. several times. For example, we can mention fingerprint readers, which are the most commonly used biometric device in the world. Firstly, you are asked to go to the enrollment place and insert at least 1 finger in the reader several times consecutively. Subsequently, your identity information such as your TR ID number, name, surname, father's name, etc. is processed in the database. This process is performed only once. Then, your information is copied to all fingerprint readers in the facility. When you want to pass through any locked door, it is sufficient for you to have the fingerprint reader read your finger once and the door opens for at least 4 seconds. The door will lock automatically immediately after you pass.

The biometric systems are used in combination with card access in the places where higher security is required. A part of the enrollment information is kept on the card. Thus, it is not allowed to open the door without the person's card and finger together.

It can also be used with the password entry screen where security is even more important. The door can be opened when both the password and the card and fingerprint information are correct at the same time. However, as the security increases, the time to pass through the door is longer (more than 5 seconds in a facility with 5.000 + users), it should be used with card readers in the facilities with a high number of personnel.
