How is ATM Security Assured?

125 million bank cards are used in Turkey. There are also nearly 50.000 ATMs. We all go to ATMs to carry out our banking transactions. Well, are ATMs secure enough?

Physical Security of ATMs

Since the ATMs are the places where money is exchanged, they are generally tried to be placed in crowded locations. Bank branches or ATMs in each location reside in order or very close to each other in certain places, and most of the bank customers carry out their business by visiting multiple ATMs, not just one ATM.

Usually, security guards are not present at the ATMs. This attracts a large number of criminals to these areas. One of the best measures to be taken is to announce that the ATM is equipped with hidden cameras and receives video from all directions.

Due to the ease of installation, cameras mounted outside the ATM have very significant visibility restrictions. Instead of mounting the camera in this way, hidden cameras with very high resolution and advanced image features that are not affected by weather conditions such as light, etc. can be placed in various parts of the ATM. Since normal hidden cameras are more affected by sunlight, they can offer over-exposed, high-pixel, and dim-lit videos. Therefore, hidden cameras with HDR feature, which is currently the best light balancing technology in the industry, should be used.

Software Security of ATMs

It is possible to automatically stop card copying and similar incidents that we often hear of in the press.

Banks with thousands of ATMs can allocate a limited number of personnel to manage these ATMs. The duties of such personnel are to manage and monitor the ATM transactions. Verifying the complaints is extremely exhaustive work. Because, contrary to popular belief, the network line bandwidth between the ATMs and the bank is generally between 128KBit/second and (in very few ATMs) maximum 2Mbit/second. Today, 100Mbit/second bandwidth is widely used, while unfortunately bandwidths are very low due to the use of secure lines and expensive tariffs in banking. Finding the moment of the incident for the inspection of the complained case is a complete suffering, so many banks can send personnel to the ATM and perform all the scans locally and back up the record of the incident. In fact, it may take months to resolve frauds at multiple ATMs and it may be too late.

Solution: Real-Time Alarm

It would be a good solution to integrate the camera recordings and the ATM Center software to prevent fraud, facilitate the review period, inspect the transactions, and improve the service. Thus, various cases can be hunted instantly and automatically by this integration.

With the integration, the transaction summaries containing the statistics of the most withdrawals or deposits of the branch or ATM can be provided. The system can automatically analyze certain transactions, such as withdrawals from multiple ATMs by one person.

It can automatically receive records of all branch transactions to filter by card number, account number, transaction amount, etc. It can review the full transaction receipt, including the details such as transaction amount and transaction time. It can review each transaction with synchronized video snapshots. It is also possible to view small images for low bandwidths and only make videos when needed.
