Abdi İbrahim Tower, Istanbul

Abdi İbrahim Tower, Istanbul

Abdi İbrahim, one of the world's top 100 pharmaceutical companies, has been the leader of the Turkish pharmaceutical sector in terms of turnover and total drug pack sales since 2003. The amount of exports made by Abdi İbrahim, which has 7.6 percent market share in Turkey, is 31 million USD to a total of 15 countries. The Abdi İbrahim Tower was designed as the management hub of the company.

The Abdi İbrahim Tower, designed by world-renown Italian architect Dante Benini, recognized as an expert in industrial buildings and pharmaceutical production facilities, was founded on an area of 15.000 sqm and was put into service in 2007. The steel construction used in the building of the Abdi İbrahim Tower reflects the strong management approach, while the glass partitions reflect the principle of transparency in management.

Every detail was conceived for the employees in the 120-meter-high building, with a magnificent view of the Bosphorus. The building, designed completely based on the concept of smart building, is equipped with cost-effective and environmentally-friendly systems.

Role of EEC

Like in many other exemplary projects, the Abdi İbrahim Tower is protected by the UTC Edwards Signature Series high-level fire alarm and smoke control system offered by EEC.

The system includes 1 central UTC Edwards Fire Alarm System panel, 1 UTC Edwards Parking Lot Carbon Monoxide Detection System Panel, 1 UTC Edwards Repeater Panel in the building security control center, and the UTC FireWorks Graphic Monitoring and Control Software and Computer in the system control center.

Technical Approach

The UTC Edwards Signature Series is a high-quality product family consisting of microprocessor-controlled and algorithm-based detectors and auxiliary field components, combining very high false-alarm immunity with quick alarm capability. The product includes detection components with the ability to make decisions with fire algorithms obtained after long test processes, and has unique survival characteristics.

The FireWorks Graphic Monitoring Software is an interface program that ensures data communication between the UTC Edwards Fire Alarm Panels and the user. Thanks to this software, all devices that are monitored and controlled by the fire alarm system can be graphically viewed on the architectural plans, and in case of possible alarm situations, it is possible to quickly access the architectural plans of the relevant areas and to make detailed reviews on the plans.

The FM200 extinguishing system was included into the system with the UTC Edwards Extinguishing Control modules in 3 different locations in the building, i.e. data processing room, system control center and system equipment room.

All locations in the building are equipped by point detection units. In addition, some 30 air handling units, dampers and fan units are controlled by the UTC Edwards Fire Alarm System according to the smoke control scenario. Carbon monoxide detection is made by using some 100 gas detection detectors in the parking lot, and fan controls are executed depending upon the carbon monoxide levels. The smoke density in the air circulating in the ventilation system is determined with duct-type detection detectors in the ventilation ducts in the building, and the smoke control fans are controlled in terms of building security according to the emergency scenario.

By ensuring integration with the building management system and loudspeaker systems, the need for the systems in the building to operate in coordination in case of emergency is fulfilled at the highest level.

Within the scope of this integration, the emergency management of the Smoke Control System is executed with the control of air handling units, fire dampers, smoke removal fans and stairwell pressurization fans, which are part of the ventilation system, and the smoke in the fire area is removed from the building without spreading to the other safe areas. Also, the control of the stairwell pressurization fans, which were installed to keep the stairs with escape routes clean in terms of smoke, is executed to ensure the safe evacuation of people.

The status of the flow switches, line shut-off valves and pumps in the Water Extinguishing System is continuously monitored with the Signature Series contact monitoring modules, while inspecting whether the system is smooth and ready to operate before a real fire occurs, the operation of the water extinguishing system in case of emergency is monitored.

The controls such as calling the elevators to the ground floor in case of fire and keeping them disabled during the fire warning are also executed automatically by the Signature Series control modules within the scope of integration.

The control of the voice evacuation announcement made through the loudspeaker system is ensured by the fire alarm system so that people can be evacuated accurately and quickly.

As in the Abdi İbrahim Tower project, the UTC Edwards Signature Series product family offers unique solution opportunities in projects with thousands of detection and control points, where large-scale and complex smoke control management is required, and the integration with the other building systems is intense.
