Start Fire Protection from Your Electrical Panels

Most fires originate from electrical panels.

Approximately a quarter of fires in industrial facilities and commercial buildings break out inside electrical panels, junction boxes and circuit breakers. In the panels installed in accordance with the technique during the installation phase, fire may occur due to new loads added in the course of time, loose connections and wear of the switchgear devices. Such fires are often noticed late, and the fire spreads to the facility through the installation, resulting in significant loss of life and property.

It is possible to extinguish electrical fires at source

There are solutions that are installed directly on the electrical and electronic panels and that quickly and efficiently extinguish a fire that may break out inside the panel. In-panel extinguishing systems that automatically extinguish fire by being triggered with high temperature and flame are the best way to ensure protection against electrical fires. The common point of these solutions, where different technologies are used, is that they can detect and extinguish fire on their own without need for an external energy source or triggering. These autonomous solutions, which we install quickly with small budgets, often extinguish fire at its source without need for activating the automatic extinguishing system in the main area.

Electrical panel extinguishing options suitable for all types of panels and junction boxes

In the FIPRON fire extinguishing technology, there are tens of thousands of microcapsules that store the fire extinguishing agent, and these microcapsules sweep the oxygen in the environment, absorb the heat, and thus execute fire suppression when the temperature of 120 °C is reached or when it comes into contact with the flame. Microencapsulation is the process where very small droplets, liquids or solids are surrounded by particles or covered with a continuous polymeric film layer.

Fk-5-1-12 gas used in the FIPRON fire extinguishing technology is a clean gas and has UL approval. The FIPRON Sticker and Fipron Cord products that use the FIPRON fire extinguishing technology extinguish and stop the fire where it breaks out. All electrical panels and junction boxes can be protected without need for pressure cylinders and electrical activation. With the Fipron solutions that are triggered with high temperature or flame and that operate autonomously, errors such as faulty discharge, gas leakage, pressure drop etc. are prevented. There is no need for additional OHS measures in terms of the Pressure Vessels Regulation. The worldwide patented Fipron solutions reduce costs and ensure reliable and efficient protection with fast and easy installation from the smallest socket junction box to medium-sized panels.

Aerosol Extinguishing Systems are the systems where aerosol generators containing solid Potassium Carbonate Compound (K2CO3) are used.

Potassium is an alkali metal due to its structure and is an ionic element with a high desire to form compounds. In general, fire occurs as a result of chain reactions of O, H, OH radicals. In the first step of the aerosol, inert gases (N2, H2O, CO2) generate particles primarily containing K2CO3 in micro sizes. In the second step of the aerosol, the extinguishing process starts, various formations of the resulting potassium quickly separate from K2CO3 and form stable compounds (KOH, etc.) with fire radicals (C, H, OH) that tend to form more ionic compounds and thus, fire is extinguished without suffocating the oxygen. However, other fire extinguishers put out the fire with the method of reducing oxygen during the suppression of the fire. Due to its structure, aerosol extinguishes the fire by preventing other components without getting into contact with the oxygen.

Electrical Panel Gas Extinguishing Systems are applied with 2 different methods as Direct and Indirect that uses FM200™, NOVEC™1230 with an operating pressure of 16 bars and CO2 gas with an operating pressure of 50 bars.

Direct systems consist of a cylinder where the extinguishing gas (FM200™, NOVEC™1230 or CO2 gas) is stored, a gas discharge valve and a plastic-based pipe with special orifices on it. When the temperature in the panel reaches 120°C, the system is activated by tearing the orifices on the pipe and the fire is extinguished by the discharge of the gas available in the cylinder. In this system, protection is allowed up to 2 m³ volume with a single cylinder. In this system, the opening that cannot be closed on the panel may not be larger than 0.1 sqm.

Indirect systems consist of a cylinder where the extinguishing gas (FM200™, NOVEC™1230 or CO2 gas) is stored, a gas discharge valve and a plastic-based pipe with special orifices on it, and a seamless stainless steel pipeline that allows for the discharge of the gas. When the temperature in the panel reaches 120°C, the orifices on the pipe are torn, the fire is detected and the valve on the cylinder is triggered when the pressure in the hose drops, and the fire is extinguished by discharging the gas through the special orifice nozzle at the outlet of the fixed stainless steel pipe installation.

Which one of these would be more suitable for my panels?

There are so many factors to determine which one of our electrical panel fire extinguishing solutions will be suitable for your facility.

  • Sizes of your panels and the openings that cannot be closed, if any.
  • Natural or forced ventilation characteristics
  • Reactivation time after an activation
  • Your OHS requirements (Pressure Vessels Regulation, MSDS restrictions, etc.)
  • Your shutdown times for installation
  • Integration with your other life and property safety systems, including the fire alarm system
  • Your investment budget

Our specialists will assess these factors and other requirements with you and create the most suitable solution for you. It is also possible for us to make a budget study with the information that you will provide before the site visit.
