Haluk Yanık, Chairman of Board of Directors at EEC Integrated Building Control Systems, discussed fire detection and warning systems in residences at the opening conference of the "IV. Fire and Security Symposium and Exhibition" held at the Wow Convention Center on November 12-13, 2015.
Haluk Yanık shared with the participants how fires in our residences may pose a deadly danger and which measures can be taken to reduce the risk of death during a fire according to the results of studies and examples.
Drawing attention to the fact that fire deaths take place most commonly in residences; Mr. Yanık said; "70% of the deaths in fires that break out in residences occur at night, because people and animals cannot smell while sleeping. In fact, even a few inhalations cause loss of consciousness due to the suffocating and toxic gases released during the fire. The average escape time from the beginning of a fire in residences is as short as 4 minutes. The panic and loss of vision experienced by those who can wake up from sleep also make it difficult to escape from the fire".
In his presentation, Haluk Yanık shared with the participants the mistakes made in the design and implementation of fire detection and warning systems in high-rise residential buildings in Turkey, and his proposed solutions. He drew attention to the fact that it is impossible for a sleeping person to notice the smoke and escape from the fire without any audible warning, and that smoke alarms may save lives. He emphasized that the smoke alarms installed at only one or two points inside the residence are insufficient to wake the sleeping person up.
Mr. Yanık said that as a solution; smoke alarm devices may reduce the risk in residences by triggering an alarm in maximum 2 minutes, when one of them is switched into alarm mode, the others should also trigger an alarm, they should be able to be connected to each other through wired and wireless options, they should have testing and mute characteristics and they should be certified according to the international standards UL217 and EN 14604.
The latest innovations in fire detection and alarm systems were demonstrated at the stand of EEC Integrated Building Control Systems in the exhibition area. The specialized team of EEC provided detailed information to the visitors about the Intelligent Addressable Fire Detectors, Network Fire Control Panels, Aspirating Highly-Sensitive Smoke Detectors, Three-Dimensional Linear Smoke Detectors, Ex-Proof Temperature, Flame and Gas Detectors and Emergency Lighting Fixtures.
The TÜYAK Fire and Security Symposium and Exhibition, which is held once every two years, is organized with the support of national and international organizations and the contributions of domestic and international universities and company representatives. The event that was last held in 2013 with the participation of over 1.500 people, was organized this year with the theme "Security in Accommodation and Healthcare Buildings".
