Turkcell Data Center, Ankara

Turkcell Ankara Data Centre is the largest data centre in Türkiye. It was opened in 2019 by Turkcell, a company serving the technological communications sector. Turkcell Ankara Data Centre is a world-class facility, operating within a 46,200 m2 indoor area, with 12,000 m2 of modular data centre space. The building has been designed to withstand earthquakes, and offers TIER III Operational Sustainability. It also has a TIER III+ infrastructure ready for TIER IV.

EEC Entegre Bina Kontrol Sistemleri has been selected as the solution partner for the installation and maintenance of life and property safety systems in the Turkcell Ankara Data Centre project.

The Role of the EEC

Edwards Fire Detection and Alarm System, Securiton ASD Precision Air Sampling Detectors, and Bosch Emergency Announcement and Public Address System were installed in the Turkcell Data Centre Ankara project. EEC's assurance has been selected to ensure that maintenance work on the systems is carried out in accordance with the relevant standards.

The engineering, material procurement and commissioning services for the systems were completed within the set timeframe of 1 year.

Technical Approach

In data centres housing high-density server equipment, network infrastructure, and critical digital assets, even split-second interruptions can lead to data loss, service disruption, and financial damage. Edwards Fire Detection Systems, developed specifically for facilities requiring high sensitivity and integration, such as data centres, were utilised in the project. The Edwards fire detection system’s high-sensitivity early warning detection capabilities, intelligent algorithms to prevent false alarms, integrated and open-protocol architecture, modular and scalable design, global certifications, and industry compliance ensures the safety of life and property, as well as the continuity of business.

The precise detection required in the white areas of the Data Centre is provided by Securiton ASD aspirating smoke detectors. In order to prevent unseen risks, highly sensitive detectors capable of capturing even the smallest smoke particles that may form inside cabinets and energy rooms were used.

A number of potential causes of false alarms in the data centre environment, including dust, temperature variations and air currents, have been eliminated. A system that distinguishes between actual fires and false alarms has been installed. This system uses various data points, including the shape, density and spread rate of smoke, to make a precise and reliable assessment. By installing this system, businesses can avoid the disruption and expense of false alarms. The system's compatibility with open protocols such as BACnet facilitates integration with fire suppression, CCTV, access control, and building automation systems. In the event of a fire, it ensures faster intervention according to the scenario. The system has been designed to be compatible with the expansion of the facility or the addition of new units thanks to the flexible and modular structure of Edwards. In order to facilitate and speed up certification and audit processes, the Edwards solution, which has references in many Tier-3 and Tier-4 projects and is fully compliant with international norms and data centre standards such as UL, FM, CE, and EN54, has been implemented.

The fire detection system software was implemented in accordance with a detailed scenario matrix prepared by the fire consultant, and the testing processes were successfully completed in collaboration with the consultant and the Turkcell team. The extinguishing control system was commissioned by integrating it with electronic control systems, allowing 5 different cylinder groups to direct gas flow to more than 70 different rooms.

In the Turkcell Data Centre project, different types of devices were selected for the Fire Detection System according to their areas of use. 1030 smoke detectors, 336 combined smoke and heat detectors, 5 flame detectors, 68 sensitive aspirating smoke detectors, 122 fire alarm buttons, 164 power supplies, 5 main panels, 1 repeater panel, and 1 graphical monitoring software were installed within the scope of the system.

Bosch products with EN54 certification were selected for the Emergency Announcement and Public Address System solution. The system is designed based on evacuation zones. Evacuation messages are automatically disseminated to the zones according to the fire scenario. In order to ensure that people evacuate correctly and quickly in an emergency, pre-recorded voice evacuation announcements are automatically broadcast via the emergency announcement system along with alarm information from the fire alarm system.
